Geez, I leave the tennis world for a week and I come back to utter chaos. First, Feli fails to qualify for
cause that won't strain his knee much, no??. And if that isn't bad enough, his partner? Not Feli, not Carlos, not his girlfriend who decided it would be just peachy to join him on the North American portion of the tour, Lleyton Hewitt??? WTF???? How in the world did that happen??? And then the draw – Rafa’s first match will either be the ever-dangerous Marat Safin or the oh-so-frustrating Robin Soderling (yes, that same annoying 'Sod' from the infamous five set, multiple rain delay Wimbledon 3rd Round match). Good luck Rafa is all I’m saying. *prays* The good news is, if Rafa can actually make it past that first match up, a good portion of the seeded players in his half of the draw (Canas, Ljubicic and Berdych) have all been eliminated. His potential opponent, going into the Quarters, would be Gasquet and that is one matchup I am more than eager to see. Allez-Vamos!!
Overshadowing the event itself though is the fact that there is actually a gambling scandal going on in tennis right now!! Yes, seriously. Allegations of "suspicious activity" *giggle* have been circulating throughout the sports media regarding the turn of events at one of Nikolay Davydenko’s recent matches. *LOL* Fixed betting in tennis. I never! *shakes head* What's next??? A player having an affair with another player's wife/girlfriend? ...and on that note...favourite Montreal tournament headline to date: Federer, Nadal resume rivalry with date in Canada. Rivalry...date in Canada...*ponders this*...oh, right, *nods* they are referring to the TENNIS and not to me, unfortunately!!! *innocent look* Well it is Rogelio's birthday tomorrow. *looks around* *plots quick journey to la belle province* *drafts scheme to eliminate Mirka* ...
TSN just listed the broadcast schedule for today – starting with the Djokovic match, followed by the Gonzalez match and climaxing with the prime time battle between Moya and Bagdhatis. Pretty decent lineup. I’ll leave it on in the background as I continue to motor through my Margaret George novel.
A final tennis reflection worth noting: it was exactly one year ago to this day (Tuesday) that I first saw Rafael Nadal
& Feliciano Lopez in person. It’s been quite a year and I’ve yet to recover fully. Yes, it was indeed that good. Happy first anniversary!!
