Since the Paris Masters really doesn't start until Rafael Nadal takes the court I suppose it isn't a bad idea to jot down a quick summary of the Madrid Masters. The event was great this year even if Rafa didn't make the finals. The matches leading up to the finals read like a dream tournament line-up - Ferrer vs Lopez, Rafa vs Gasquet, Rafa vs Feli, Fed vs Murray, Rafa vs Simon, Djoker get tortured by Karlovic (*LOL*). I hope the Madrid fans realized how truly lucky they were. Feli played so well - he made up for his somewhat lacklustre performance in the US Open this year. It's almost a shame that he lost to Rafa. As much as I wanted Rafa to beat Simon and make it to the Finals, I was happy to see Gilles take the victory. Too bad he didn't win the whole tournament. He seems like a really decent guy. Some of my favourite moments included:
- Rafa needing not one but two therapists to massage his famous *ss
- The Brit commentators previewing the Lopez/Ferrer match - calling Feli "flashy, aggressive and good-looking", whereas Ferrer "is tenacious, hustles well, but isn't quite as good-looking" *LOL* poor David. Note of course that they made no mention of their tennis ability *rolls eyes*
- The improvement in the skill of the 'model' ballgirls - normally these girls haven't got a clue what they are doing out there. This year they finally manged to find some models that apparently understood the rules of tennis. Yes, they can be taught. Who knew?
Yep, this tournament definitely had its moments. In the end, Andy Murray won. He really has bulked up and it seems to be paying off for him. We'll see how long that lasts. He is on Rafa's side of the Paris draw and is his likely Semi-Final opponent...but that is still a ways off. Feli also is coming into this tournament with a lot of momentum after having reached the Semis in Basel where he lost to his royal highness, the god of Swiss tennis... (did anyone seriously think Federer could possibly lose at home???)
Team Real Madrid has basically become Team Gonzalo Higuain over the past couple of weeks and I am not complaining one bit. Yesterday you barely noticed Van Nistelrooy's absence. It is great to have Gago back though...and I'm loving the curls. I had to laugh with Sergio Ramos being out of the game - poorniviene , she had to run into the living room just to see him whenever the cameras panned over to him on the sidelines *LOL* Hopefully he'll be back next week. By the way, every time I hear the song Womanizer, I can't help but think of
Sergio and his harem this team.
