Coriolanus

Is there possibly anything better on this planet than watching Tom Hiddleston in a Shakespeare play? Thanks to the National Theatre Live I was able to view a live broadcast of Tom Hiddleston’s performance of Coriolanus from the Donmar Warehouse in London. Naturally it was brilliant. It was a very minimal production which I find is most effective when performing  Shakespeare (unless of course its one of his more fantastical plays like The Tempest or A Midsummer Night’s Dream where you really want to experience all the pageantry).  Of course being one of the Roman plays it was even more enjoyable for me. I love the dichotomy of the Plebs vs Patricians and particularly the way they showed these Tribunes of the Plebs. So annoying. They certainly weren’t anything like the Gracchi. Meh, I am always on the Patricians side anyways…I’m so bad. The rest of the cast did a decent job as well…and I did enjoy Mark Gatiss as Menenius.

For the record, as brilliant as Hiddleston is, I maintain that Liev Schrieber is the consummate actor for all things Shakespeare. I just don’t know what it is about him but whenever he recites those lines he has the ability to make it sound so very contemporary and relatable and yet still truly profound and poetic. I would have loved to have seen him when he played Hamlet on Broadway.

Can you imagine both Liev and Tom in a Shakespeare play? I think we'd die of happiness. Now which one would be the only dilemma.
