Moulin Rouge Ballet

I always said Moulin Rouge would make a better play than a movie. Today I had the privilege of seeing it as a ballet performed by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. It was breathtakingly beautiful but as good as it was I honestly think it could have been better. The costumes were all right – again not as spectacular as I had hoped for. The highlight was the tango portion. The story more or less did run parallel to what happens in the movie – boy falls in love with a girl he can’t have because the head honcho with the Moulin Rouge is in 'love' (read: lust) with her….and yes there is a tragic ending. So same basic story but re-imagined. Great routines, great dancing. I just felt that there could have been even more to it. Meh…now bring on the Broadway version
